Okay, it's just past 10:00 p.m. here on Oahu and the parties are winding down, as local hero and three-time world champ Andy Irons took the first jewel in the Triple Crown of Surfing at Haleiwa earlier this afternoon.
Irons' strong performances in no less than four heats today showed that he's not only the best of the best in Hawaiian waters, but that he has a little Hawaii Ironman in him as well.
Local boy Joel Centeio put himself within reach of qualifying for the WCT with a surprising third place finish (seems that the Op Pro always has an unusual suspect in its final each year). The next contest (and WQS season finale) is the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, and the holding period for that one begins in just three short days, so Centeio shouldn't have to wait too long to have his WCT fate determined.
