So check this out: a couple of months back there was quite a bit of hoopla when Kelly Slater failed to arrive on time in South Africa for his first round heat at the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey's Bay.
The story is that Slater was hanging in SoCal with Pearl Jam, who were doing a number of shows in the L.A. and San Diego area. At least once, Slater actually joined Pearl Jam on stage for the band's cover of Neil Young's classic "Rockin' in the Free World." Slater eventually did make it to J-Bay and surfed his way to a third-place finish in the Billabong event.
Now Pearl Jam has signed to open for U2 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on December 9, which is two days into the holding period for the Rip Curl Pipeline Masters. Will we see a Pearl Jam/Kelly Slater reunion that night? Tickets for the U2 show with Pearl Jam are still available at Ticketmaster and through various brokers. Get them while you can.
